Mr Elswood has taught in Staffordshire, Cheshire and Wirral as a teacher and school leader for the last 22 years. He was first appointed as Headteacher in 2009 after gaining his Headship qualification (NPQH).
He enjoyed leading an infant and junior school through an amalgamation to form a new school and Governing Body. Mr Elswood successfully secured £3.2 million of capital funding for new school buildings for a newly formed Cheshire school.
In 2011 Mr Elswood moved to a four form entry school (880 children on roll) on the Wirral which was based across two separate sites.
Mr Elswood was appointed as a Magistrate in 2009 and still enjoys this community based role.
Mr Elswood was appointed as Executive Headteacher for the St John Chrysostom Federation in October 2016 for the two schools. Initially he worked with the two governing bodies to form a hard federation which formally started in January 2017. The two schools have more than 120 employees and a senior team of eight who ensure that outcomes for children remain at the heart of decision making. Both schools within the Federation are now graded 'Good' by OFSTED.
In recent years Mr Elswood has worked with other schools beyond the Federation to offer leadership and ongoing school to school support. This has involved working as a Headteacher Consultant and joining an Interim Executive Board for a local primary school. In January 2021 Mr Elswood enjoyed the challenge and opportunity to work with another third primary school as Headteacher. This support was brokered through Manchester Diocese and lasted for twelve months.
