At St John's we follow a creative, topic-based curriculum that is led by a key text. The objectives for our curriculum come from the National Curriculum 2014. We use Read, Write, Inc. in Year 1 as our sole approach to the teaching of phonics. Click the link below to see our long term curriculum for this year. We will soon be adding a medium term plan, which provides further detail. If you would like to know more, please visit our subject website pages or attend one of our school workshops or parent events such as Share the Learning, Class Assembly or Parents' Evening.
Summer Term 1- Journeys
During Summer 1, the children in Y1 will be thinking about which journeys we could go on and what we might discover. We will be joining Sunny the Meerkat, a character from our key text ‘Meerkat Mail’, on his journey around the world to visit his mongoose cousins and find the perfect place to live.
In art and design we will be creating our own wrapping paper for parcels using repeated pattern art techniques inspired by the artist Orla Kiely. The children will choose and produce their own repeating pattern design linked to Meerkat Mail.
We will become explorers in geography this half term by making our very own maps that will take us on a journey around our school! We will continue to learn about seasons and weather in our science lessons. Hopefully, some lovely weather will make an appearance before the end of the term!
